Liquor advertising has sold the same thing for sixty years: be the person in the room. A declining sweet whiskey could never outspend the cooler brands at that exact game.
Redefine the word already in the name. Not comfort as softness, comfort as comfortable in your own skin: sixty seconds of a heavyset man in tiny briefs walking a beach without once sucking it in.
The Stupid/Smart of it
Stupid: Running a liquor ad in the category's own beach uniform and swapping out the one thing it is built around: the aspirational body.
Smart: Casting the opposite of the category's beautiful lead looks like a joke, until you notice he has the best posture on the beach and the joke is on everyone reacting to him.
Only the brand literally named Comfort can reclaim the word as self-possession and make the anti-aspiration ad its birthright.
Real confidence is not caring how you look, the opposite of what every rival sells, so the spot quietly reclassifies the whole category as insecurity.
The casting is the entire ad. Played for laughs it collapses; played with that posture, he becomes the most confident man on the beach.
