Gorilla

Cadbury Dairy Milk · Fallon London · dir. Juan Cabral

Ninety seconds of a gorilla, one Phil Collins drum fill, zero chocolate.

The insight

In 2006 Cadbury recalled over a million chocolate bars after a salmonella scare — a £20m mess that dented something worse than the balance sheet: people's affection for the brand. You can't argue your way back into someone's heart with product facts. The only route back was to make people feel joy again — and joy has nothing to do with cocoa percentages.

The idea

So Fallon made a film with no chocolate in it at all. A gorilla sits at a drum kit, eyes closed, savouring the long build of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" — and at the exact right second, lets rip on the fill we've all air-drummed. Pure anticipation and release. The logo waits until the very end. The idea isn't about chocolate; it's about the feeling a bar of it is supposed to give you.

How it works

It ran under a new banner — "Glass and a Half Full Productions" — recasting Cadbury as a maker of joy rather than a seller of sweets. It launched in the Big Brother finale, then detonated online: 6 million views within weeks, 12 million-plus within months, 300+ parodies, and it shoved a 1981 Phil Collins single back up the charts. The craft is invisible but total: the suit was a Stan Winston creation from the film Congo, worn by Garon Michael, with an animatronic face (and added gold teeth) selling every micro-expression.

The Stupid/Smart of it

Stupid: answer a food-safety crisis with a wordless gorilla drum solo that never mentions, shows, or explains the product. The client nearly killed it — of course they did.

Smart: the strategy underneath is airtight — a brand rebuilding trust needs emotion, not argument, and joy is Cadbury's true product. The bravery is the restraint: the discipline to say nothing and trust one perfect feeling to do all the work.

Why we love it

Almost every brand in a hole starts explaining itself. This one shut up and made you smile — and the smile did what a hundred reassurance ads couldn't. It's the purest proof that the bravest idea and the sharpest strategy are usually the same idea wearing a gorilla suit.
